The municipal government of Taytay, Rizal, has set up a dedicated cold storage facility for COVID-19 vaccines, as confirmed by Mayor Joric Gacula in an interview on GMA News’ Unang Balita. The facility, located at Royale Cold Storage in Barangay San Isidro, was chosen due to its world-class standards and secure environment for vaccine storage.
“This facility can hold up to 28 million doses,” Mayor Gacula said. “We selected it because of its exceptional quality, ensuring that the vaccines remain effective and are not compromised.”
The facility’s capacity far exceeds the requirements for Taytay, whose population is approximately 370,000. It will store COVID-19 vaccines supplied by both the national and local governments, allowing for secure and scalable storage.
To support this effort, the Taytay local government unit (LGU) has allocated P300 million for purchasing vaccines from Moderna and AstraZeneca. The storage facility is equipped to maintain a temperature of -20 degrees Celsius, meeting the requirements for both vaccine brands.
The Taytay LGU will adhere to the national government’s prioritization guidelines for vaccine distribution. Under the municipality’s vaccination program, led by the municipal health office, a team of at least 70 nurses will serve as vaccinators. Local schools will be repurposed as vaccination centers, each equipped with observation rooms to monitor recipients for any potential side effects.
In addition, an online monitoring system will track vaccine recipients’ health status periodically to ensure ongoing safety.
As of the mayor’s latest update, Taytay has only 40 active COVID-19 cases. Mayor Gacula continues to urge residents to practice health protocols diligently to prevent further spread of the virus.
